Manual vs Automatic Licence: What Can You Drive After You Pass?

The type of car you pass your test in determines what you're legally allowed to drive afterwards. It's one of the most important decisions you'll make as a learner — and it's worth understanding before you book your first lesson.

The Two Licence Types

In the UK, a full car driving licence (Category B) comes in two forms:

Manual Licence

If you pass your test in a car with a manual gearbox, your licence allows you to drive both manual and automatic cars. There are no restrictions.

Automatic Licence

If you pass your test in an automatic car (including an EV), your licence allows you to drive automatic cars only. You cannot legally drive a manual car without passing another test.

What Counts as 'Automatic'?

An automatic car is any car without a manual clutch pedal and gear stick. This includes:

  • Conventional automatics — petrol or diesel cars with automatic gearboxes
  • Electric vehicles (EVs) — fully electric cars, which are always single-speed automatic
  • Hybrids — petrol-electric or diesel-electric hybrids with automatic transmissions
  • Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) — automatic as standard

If you pass in any of these, you get an automatic licence.

What Can You Drive with Each Licence?

Can You Upgrade from Automatic to Manual?

Yes, but you'll need to take and pass another driving test in a manual car. There's no automatic upgrade — you have to go through the full test process again, including the manoeuvres and independent driving section.

This is why many learners choose manual even though it's harder: once you pass, you never have to think about it again.

Does It Matter in 2026?

Increasingly, the distinction matters less. Here's why:

  • New petrol and diesel car sales end in 2035 — most new cars will be electric or hybrid (both automatic)
  • Automatics are now the majority — over 60% of new cars sold in the UK are automatic
  • EVs are automatic — the fastest-growing segment is all automatic

If you only plan to drive automatics and EVs — which will be most cars on the road within a decade — an automatic licence is perfectly sufficient.

However, if you:

  • May need to drive a manual for work (vans, company cars, fleet vehicles)
  • Want to drive older cars that are manual
  • Want maximum flexibility

…then a manual licence is still the safer choice.

What About EVs Specifically?

Passing in an EV gives you an automatic licence — identical to passing in a conventional automatic. There's no special 'EV licence' and no restrictions on EVs. You can drive:

  • Any electric vehicle
  • Any conventional automatic
  • Any hybrid or plug-in hybrid

Some PASS-UK instructors teach in EVs, so you can learn and pass in a fully electric car if you prefer.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose manual if:

  • You want to drive any car without restrictions
  • You might drive manual vans or company cars for work
  • You're willing to spend a bit more time learning

Choose automatic if:

  • You want the simplest, fastest route to a licence
  • You only plan to drive automatics, hybrids or EVs
  • You're a nervous learner who wants less to manage

Choose EV automatic if:

  • You want to learn in a modern, quiet, smooth electric car
  • You're happy with an automatic licence
  • You want to future-proof your driving skills

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive a manual car with an automatic licence? No. An automatic licence only covers automatic cars. To drive a manual, you must pass another driving test in a manual car.

Can I drive an automatic with a manual licence? Yes. A manual licence covers both manual and automatic cars — no restrictions.

Is passing in an EV an automatic licence? Yes. Passing in an electric vehicle gives you a Category B automatic licence. You can drive EVs, conventional automatics and hybrids.

Can I upgrade my automatic licence to manual? Only by taking and passing another driving test in a manual car. There's no automatic upgrade.

Will manual cars disappear? New petrol and diesel car sales end in 2035, so most new cars will be electric or hybrid (automatic). However, millions of manual cars will remain on the road for years after that. A manual licence gives you maximum flexibility.
