Changing or swapping your practical test centre
- Car tests can no longer be moved to any centre in Great Britain. Each time you change, you can stay where you are, move to one of the 3 nearest test centres at that time, or move back to the centre you first booked at (or were booked at on 9 June 2026).
- The 3 nearest centres are set by DVSA using driving distance avoiding motorways, and the list can change as DVSA updates it.
- You can change a car driving test 2 times. All other test types can be changed 6 times, and can still be moved to any centre in Great Britain.
- Give at least 10 full working days' notice for a car test (3 for other tests) or you lose your fee. Monday to Saturday count as working days; Sundays and public holidays do not.
- You must change the test yourself — your instructor is not allowed to change, swap or cancel a car test for you, and booking a car test for someone else is against the law.
- You need your driving licence number plus your test booking reference or theory test pass certificate number. The online service runs 6am to 11:40pm and shows appointments up to 24 weeks ahead.
- Short-notice changes can still be refunded for illness or injury, bereavement, a school or college exam, or a stolen licence — email DVSA with proof.
- Run out of changes? Cancel and rebook — a full refund needs at least 10 full working days' notice for a car test.

Ready to Pass? — learning to drive is more than just passing the test
DVSA's "Ready to Pass?" campaign helps learners work out whether they're genuinely test-ready — nearly half of all car tests in Great Britain are failed. Moving your test back when you're not ready costs nothing if you give at least 10 full working days' notice.
- You don't need prompts from your driving instructor.
- You don't make serious or dangerous mistakes when you're driving.
- You can pass mock driving tests under real test conditions.
- You've practised ways of managing your test nerves.
- Your driving instructor agrees you're ready.
- You've worked through the 27 driving skills on your Driver's Record until each one is 'can do without help'.
